Setting - The setting for this trailer is in a city and it starts off in the home of the main character. It then cuts to shots of the film and what happens, but there is no way that you could understand what happens in the film. This has been done on purpose by the director of the film to capture the audiences attention and therefore wanting to see what happens in the full film.
Technical - The first few shots do not tell us a lot about the movie but when the trailer moves to Shaun walking out of his house, this gives us what is called an 'establishing shot.' This tells us, the audience exactly where the film is set. However, reverting back to the first shot this is good because of how close the camera is and it is a 'extreme close up' and the characters' facial expressions say a lot about the night before and how Shaun is living. The cut to the notice on the board expands on what sort of life he is living. From the gate of the house, the camera 'tracks' Shaun on his way to the shop and we see a zombie in the 'establishing shot' and this straight away attracts your eyes to the screen and wonder 'why?' 'what will happen next?' and we make up assumptions to how the film is going to pan out and what is going to happen to the characters. Evidently the director has done this on purpose to capture his audience to the film. When the trailer gets to 1.08mins the shot with the hand prints on the door of the fridge is what is known as a 'mid-close up' By using this shot we know that Shaun has taken no notice of the blood on the fridge and this again makes us wonder and we are constantly asking ourselves questions about the movie, just from the trailer. The 'reverse zoom shot' after the cut has been made from the garden gate to Shaun slouching on the sofa drinking his drink, lets us see more of the house that he lives in and gives us a viewing of how untidy the house is and what kind of lives the two men are living.
Iconography - There aren't too many things in this movie that are the usual things that you would see in a normal horror movie. The things that are what you would expect to see are things such as;
- The blood and gore in the movie which is a typical horror convention.
- Zombies which are the villains in this film because they try and kill the humans.
- The theory of Vladimir Propp links well with this movie because the 8 characters that Propp believes that are in every horror appear in this film.
- The lighting is traditional of the horror genre because it isn't sunny and it's very dull and this relates to the mood that is created by the weather.
- The weapons that are used are iconic of the genre.
- The iconography of the monsters can connote fear within the characters, especially the female characters.
Characterisation -
- Shaun - The hero in the film and a genuine, down to earth guy who has an average job working in the local electrical store.
- Shauns flat mate - Fat, young guy who doesnt work and just dosses about and plays video games and still doesn't take thing seriously even when the zombies are invading.
- Shauns love - She is an intelligent girl who has a lot going for her and isn't in the slightest interested in Shaun because she doesn't want to live how he does.
Sane vs Insane - This is just the battle between the zombies and the human beings.
Zombie Apocalypse - This is the invation and the large number of the zombies coming to the town and trying to take it over.
Good vs Evil - This theme is the battle between the humans and the zombies. The humans are obviously the good in the movie and the zombies, clearly the evil that exsists in the film.
The Conventions of the Horror Genre -
The majority of the conventions that are in the horror genre are visible in the trailer such as;
Villains, Hero, potential false hero, and donor. There is quite a lot of gore in the trailer which is another convention of this genre. I think that the trailer portrays a lot of conventions considering that it is only 3:21 minutes long. Another one is when the character is walking back from the shop and he is out numbered by the zombies and doesnt even notice them. He does notice one as he walks up to his house and just assumes that he is a tramp wanting change.
